PRESERVING A PRECIOUS WORLD HERITAGE
Bukit Lawang is on the banks of the Bohorok river and on the doorstep of the Gunung Leuser National Park, which is one of the richest tropical rainforest in Southeast Asia and registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004. It is a preserved area that stretches up to over 7927 km2 and hosts thousands of species like elephants, rhinos, tigers, leopard cats, thomas leaf monkeys, macaques, and gibbons to name a few.
Towered over by the mount Leuser, from which the forest takes its name, the park is one of the world’s most important and biologically diverse conservation areas and one of the last place on Earth where you can observe wild Orangutans.
For more than 4 million people in Sumatra’s Aceh province, the rainforest is a vital life support system, providing clean water and a whole host of other benefits. The decimation of the ecosystem exposes them to environmental disasters such as flooding and landslides. But the forest remains under constant threats brought on by commercial interests in palm oil, rubber, logging or illegal plantations.
It is to help preserve this environment that Hotel Orangutan decided to open its doors to visitors in order to introduce them to the delicate and precious beauty of the jungle to raise awareness and conscious behaviour towards its preservation.
SUPPORTING THE LOCAL ECONOMY
Besides raising awareness on a frail ecosystem and protecting the Orangutans, Hotel Orangutan’s mission is also to support local economy and empower its community. As such, in an effort to bring as much capital to the local community as possible, the hotel was built using local construction material and artisan tradesman (carvers, etc).
Since it started operations, the hotel also committed to use local businesses to provide all services required for its operations (eg. rafting, trekking, tours, camping, etc) to continue pumping capital into the local community.
SAVING AN ENDANGERED SPECIES
The Sumatran Orangutan is one of two species of Orangutans – only found on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia – they are much rarer than the Bornean Orangutan.
But, the relentless destruction of Sumatra’s rainforests has pushed the Sumatran Orangutan to the edge of extinction. With only around 14,600 remaining in the wild, the species is classified as Critically Endangered – inexorable victims of deforestation for farmlands, logging, mining, roads, international demand for palm oil and the short-sighted land-use policies in place.
The Leuser Ecosystem is the last stronghold of the species and the last place on Earth where elephants, rhinos, orangutans and tigers still co-exist in the wild. All four iconic species are now classified as Critically Endangered.
It is our mission to organise the safe and respectful encounter of people and nature with the hope that it will help to change behaviours and to open the eyes of our visitors on the reality of the jungle.
